The airport was closed around midday Sunday, and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Florida Highway Patrol troopers blocked its entrances and access roads. The I-95 exit to the airport was also blocked.
Traffic backed up on Belvedere Road. Travelers carrying luggage walked down the airport driveway and waited for rides along the road. No one was allowed to enter, including on foot.
A later update said President Trump shut the airport while departing Mar-a-Lago for Washington, D.C. Deputies and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office officials had not immediately explained the closure.
